This was recommended in our discussion of The Light Brigade and I am glad I read it The title story All You Zombies is a tightly written time travel tale that took me a while to wrap my head around even though they reveal uite early on that time travel is going to be a key element It is uite impressive that Robert A Heinlein manages to do cleanly in barely than a dozen pages what took Kameron Hurley a few hundredThey was a psychological thriller that I guessed the ending of right off the bat but then went back and for the whole time not sure if I was right or not The fact that I was continually second and third and fourth guessing myself on this is a testament to the skill of the author to make the reader feel a taste of what the protagonist is going throughAnd He Built a Crooked House is a marvel of the written word in that he manages to paint a picture on the page of something that not only is a challenge to represent without images but to be honest is difficult if not impossible to represent with pictures either He invokes a fourth physical dimension with convincing skill and while toying with the limits of our three dimensional minds to conceive of such a thing his characters react in an entirely believable fashion This is the best possible outcome when theoretical mathematics collides with the English languageOur Fair City is the story with the least science fiction flavor to it verging on the edge of fantasy with a sentient whirlwind It seems like his opportunity to poke fun at the ineptness of bureaucracy and government but it was an entertaining short story none the lessIf you focus on the surprise reveal of The Man Who Traveled In Elephants you miss out on the real meaning of this story It paints a picture of a couple who love each other and know exactly what brings them happiness in the world Sometimes it is easy to forget how fantastical the simple things have become

This audiobook of stories by Robert Heinlein was pretty good The narrator had a little bit of a monotone going on but overall I did enjoy this collection

I'd been dying to read All You Zombies for ages but could never find any collection containing it in any of my libraries So I finally grabbed this on an audio loan it took a minute to get used to but I actually really loved Spider Robinson's narration All You Zombies was fantastically mind bending and all four of the other stories were good too I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for a larger Heinlein anthology to read my only experience with him before this was Have Spacesuit Will Travel

Nothing much is better than Heinlein when he's good and in this collection he is very very good After seeing the movie Predestination I picked this up to read the short story it was based on This is one of those very rare times when the movie is as good as the story and the story is greatAnd the other four stories aren't shabby not shabby at all Heinlein you are the master

Like finding one of grandma's old recipes and finally savor in those wonderful flavors that had been slowly fading in your dreamsHeinlein blended story telling craft and imagination to grab this youngster by the collar and haul him off to amazing joyous and tragic new vistas of the human experience These few stories perhaps not his best but damned good remind me of those heady days exploring those vistas and of the feel of life changing wonder
